| The Binns-Counts Center is in the Cumberland Plateau region of Appalachia, in Dickenson County, one of the coalfield counties of Virginia. The center is at an elevation of 1500 feet and the surrounding ridges are another 500 to 700 feet higher. Steep-sloped and closely-spaced ridges form a network of narrow valleys and "hollows". These mountains with their rugged beauty have given birth to a culture of deep-family roots, reliance on simple living and a musical heritage that has spread world-wide. The Center is on state route 63 and is approximately 8 miles southeast from Clintwood, the principal town of the county. Interstate highway 81 is to the south, a little more than an hour's drive away. |
