The center is at an elevation of 1500 feet and the surrounding ridges are another 500 to 700 feet higher. Steep-sloped and closely-spaced ridges form a network of narrow valleys and "hollows". These mountains with their rugged beauty have given birth to a culture of deep-family roots, reliance on simple living and a musical heritage that has spread world-wide.
The Center is on state route 63 and is approximately 8 miles southeast from Clintwood, the principal town of the county. Interstate highway 81 is to the south, a little more than an hour's drive away.
